This week the managing director for the Danish Patent and Trademark Office and the future president for the European Patent organization are visiting TARGIT in Hjørring. The purpose of the visit is to gather information to be used in the modernization of the European patent system.

Hjørring, February 22, 2006 –TARGIT is one of the Danish companies that have submitted the most patent applications. The Danish Patent and Trademark Office and the future president of the European Patent Organization (EPO) have therefore decided to meet with TARGIT in connection to the modernization of the European patent system. Alison Brimelow, who in a short period of time will become the president of the European Patent Organization, and Jesper Kongstad is visiting TARGIT to survey how the company uses innovation and how Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) become part of the business.

In addition, EPO and the Patent and Trademark Office want to hear TARGIT’s comments on the European patent case processing so that the company’s input can be part of the ongoing development of the case processing procedures. In addition to the visit at TARGIT, EPO and the Patent and Trademark Office will also be visiting NanoNord in Aalborg, B&O in Struer, NKT Research in Birkerød, Novozymes in Bagsværd, Dansk Industri, and finally, the Organization for Danish Patent Agents.

The future organization of the European patent case processing is currently being discuss at a strategic level, and here the Patent and Trademark Office works on behalf of Denmark with the aim to make the case processing more effective and to obtain an even better quality within the EPO. One way to ensure this is to have the national patent authorities be national centres for competence and have them solve cases on behalf of EPO. So far, it has been agreed to establish cooperation between EPO and the national offices. The next step is to find specific solutions that will enable a more efficient case processing.
