Clearly there is a problem with [<"May "YYYY>] as it will always return a value for May, if it works at all.

The solution will be to refer to the key values of your month level. Since I don't know how you have defined the key for your month level, I have suggested a couple of solutions below.

Assuming that you have a combined key for your month level that is something like M+YYYY, e.g. May 2012 would be 52012, your TimeDef syntax should looke like this:

#|TimeDef:[<"Calendar "YYYY>].[<"Quarter "Q, YYYY>].&[<M]&[YYYY>]|#

Assuming that you have a combined key for your month level that is something like YYYY+MM, e.g. May 2012 would be 201205, your TimeDef syntax should looke like this:

#|TimeDef:[<"Calendar "YYYY>].[<"Quarter "Q, YYYY>].&[<YYYY]&[MM>]|#

PS: If you log on to the TARGIT Portal www.mytargit.com and go to the Download Center, you will find an "Installation and configuration guide" as a downloadable PDF within each of TARGIT BI Suite installation folders. The guide includes an excellent chapter on setting up the Dynamic Periods syntax.
