Is Your Front-End Working for You?

If it’s not broke, don’t fix it, right? Your TARGIT front-end experience might be delivering the information you need when you need it, but is it supported by the BI documents that are aligned with your corporate identity and internal user organization? You might be missing out on best practices that would make your TARGIT solution more aligned with your company’s needs. That will make your work life easier and give end-users a faster, smoother experience.

At TARGIT, we are committed to grow and change with you as the needs of your organization evolve. A big part of a successful analytics journey is a regular evaluation of your front-end solution to ensure it is delivering data-driven insight in the ways that work best for your end-users. As TARGIT’s Senior Digital Experience Manager, that is my passion and my specialty.

New Front End Package

My team has developed a new Front End Package to help sharpen your TARGIT skills, update your documents, and learn new best practices. Throughout the course, we’ll work with you on four specific sections: documents best practices, visualization review, personas evaluation, and design manual.

BI documents: Best practices

Here, we review selected reports, analyses, and dashboards that are most important to your organization and end user’s daily work lives. We'll focus on structure, navigation, best practices, calculations, and (in the case of available logging cubes) statistics for each. We’ll also redesign any documents that don’t adhere to best practices to create a better experience for your end-users.

Data visualization brush up

The data visualization workshop includes methods and suggestions for incorporating your company’s corporate identity into every document.

Personas evaluation

It is so important to regularly review the type of personas who design and consume information with your TARGIT solution. In this section, we work with you to re-evaluate your evolving user personas. When you have BI that works specifically for each end-user, it will further improve user adoption across the company.

Design manual

Finally, we work with you to create a basic guide that contains guidelines for creating or changing BI documents. This is a simple document with a tremendous amount of power for simplifying any decisions needed to go into document creation. The manual will include guidelines for fonts, sizes, colors, logos, and more to ensure your corporate identity is reflected professionally and consistently throughout your BI solution. This is important for internal as well as external document sharing with partners and suppliers.

A before and after look

Below are a few examples of how we use the Front End Review to weave in brand and add consistency to analyses with predefined design guidelines.

When we work with you to redesign your documents, we combine the industry’s Best Practices for data visualization with your own branding to create a consistent, user-friendly dashboard experience. Here's some examples of dashboards that we transformed with meaningful tweaks to the design.

The first place we started was to add menus for easy navigation between analyses. This helps users dig deeper to find the “why” behind the “what.” In other words, it helps users find what is driving the data in a single click.

The goal with every dashboard is to deliver the necessary information to users in a glance. As we’ve written about before, the faster the better. With these dashboards, we created easy overviews to minimize the time the user has to glance across the dashboard to understand the content and key points. This draws attention to the most important KPIs by placing them on the top of the dashboard so it is the first place that draws the eyes, with more detailed visualizations below for more information.

Structuring and aligning elements not only is more aesthetically pleasing, but it also improves the time end-users need to process visuals. We also formatted elements such as fonts, colors, and sizes and highlighted the effects to ensure readability and make everything easier to understand.

As you can see, well-designed data visualizations are also much easier to interpret than tables and crosstabs. Decreasing the number of elements on a dashboard by removing redundant items reduces complexity of the entire dashboard. The result is a clear, easy-to-understand visual representation of your most important metrics.
